History
The city in the centre of Spain has existed since the 9th century at the latest. At that time, a Moorish castle was built for defence (several times successfully). Over the centuries, the city was besieged countless times, mostly unsuccessfully. Nevertheless, the rulers changed over this long period. Isolated remains of the walls can still be seen today. In the 20th century, the city was badly damaged by German and Italian bombardments and much fell into the hands of Francisco Franco. Even after the occupation, things were not quiet in the city: student protests and a cultural movement changed the city greatly. The strong growth of the population from 500 thousand around 1900 to 3 million in 1980 has also shaped the cityscape to this day.
Economy
Madrid’s excellent geographical location in the middle of the Iberian Peninsula makes it Spain’s economic hub. With over 18% of Spain’s total economic output, Madrid is the leading business and industrial location. The most important sector, accounting for 78% of total output, is the service sector. The metropolitan region is also home to the aircraft, automotive, textile, chemical and food industries. Madrid is also important as a financial centre, as most of the banks represented in Spain are located here. This portfolio of companies is complemented by foreign corporations such as Siemens, Bosch, Microsoft, IBM, and many more. The central location of the city also favours the role of the airport: it is now one of the largest in Europe and carries almost 60 million passengers a year.
